EALA Marks International Day of Democracy

Assembly adopts motion to mark Day as part of its annual calendar

The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) meeting at the National Assembly of Burundi today collectively adopted a motion for special recognition of the International Day of Democracy. The United Nations General Assembly in 2007 declared 15 September International Day of Democracy, and parliaments around the world have celebrated the day since.

Hon. Dora Byamukama moved to have the Day recognized by the East African Community’s own legislative organ as its First Meeting of the Fourth Session entered the second day. The adoption of the motion means the International Democracy Day now gets included in the yearly legislative calendar of the Assembly. Speaking on the same subject the Chairperson of the Council of Ministers Hon. Dr. Diodorus Kamala affirmed that he would dispatch official statements to the five Partner States to mark the Day.

Earlier Hon. Daniel Wandera Ogalo had moved a motion seeking leave (introduction without publication) of the House to introduce a Private Members Bill entitled “The Inter-University Council for East Africa (Amendment) Bill, 2010”. Hon. Ogalo also introduced to the EAC Election Bill, 2008 for Second Reading but debate was deferred to another day.

Assembly Members also congratulate Dr Sabine Ntakarutimana, a former Member of the House on her recent appointment as Burundi’s Minister of Health and HIV. The Rt. Hon. Abdirahin Abdi, Speaker of the EALA, is also expected to swear in Hon. Prof. Hellen Sambili, Minister of EAC Affairs (Kenya) as an ex-officio Member of the Assembly during this Meeting.
