The region has a total surface area of 1,817.7 thousand square kilometres. Tanzania accounts for slightly over half (51.7%) of the surface area while Burundi and Rwanda account for equal shares of the surface area at 1.5 per cent each. Kenya and Uganda account for 32.1 and 13.3 per cent,
respectively.
