EALA Members to Assess Tourism and Wildlife Projects in EAC

East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Members are from tomorrow, March 2, 2011, carrying out an assessment in the capitals of the Partner States on the EAC projects and programmes in the tourism and wildlife sectors.

The “on the spot assessment” takes place concurrently in Bujumbura, Kigali and Kampala on March 2-4, 2011.  On the same dates, other EALA members shall be touring Arusha and Zanzibar.  The EALA Members shall then proceed to Nairobi on March 4, 2011.  The Members are expected to wind up the tour on March 6, 2011 with a de-briefing meeting in Nairobi.

Specifically, the aims of the assessment are to:
a)    Take stock of the progress so far made in implementing EAC projects and programs within the context of the EAC Tourism and Wildlife Marketing Plan Strategy.
b)    Propose recommendations for improvements for benefit of all East Africans.
c)    Interface with the stakeholders in the tourism and wildlife sector.
d)    Undertake a study tour of some colleges offering training that is relevant to the sectors.

During the assessment tour, the EALA Members shall meet with hoteliers and caterers as well as with other relevant associations of tour operators.   At the same time, EALA shall engage government officials, holding talks with representatives from the Ministries of Tourism and the Ministries responsible for the East African Community Affairs in the Partner States.

The tours are part of the oversight function of EALA on the implementation of the various programmes and projects of the EAC.

Last year, the EAC Council of Ministers adopted the draft Protocol on EAC Tourism and Wildlife Management. The objective of the draft Protocol on Tourism and Wildlife Management is among others, to provide for the establishment of mechanisms and institutions for the coordination, promotion and facilitation for the development of responsible tourism and sustainable wildlife management within the Community.
