Bunge la Afrika Mashariki Newsletter Launched

In a bid to bridge the information divide within the EAC region, EALA has today launched its Newsletter – Bunge la Afrika Mashariki at a ceremony officiated by the President of the Republic of Burundi and the Chairperson of the EAC Heads of Summit, H.E. President Pierre Nkurunziza, at the Parliament of Rwanda in Kigali, Rwanda. President Pierre Nkurunziza officiates at unveiling of EALA’s inaugural edition.

In his remarks, President Nkurunziza hailed EALA for the novelty in launching its flagship Newsletter adding that it would go a long way to market and publicise the activities of the Community.

“Since ours is a people-centred integration process, it is imperative for the Organs and Institutions of the EAC to constantly appraise the people on pertinent developments, plans and goals.   I therefore commend the initiative by the East African Legislative Assembly to come up with this Newsletter which I believe, will go a long way to sensitize and educate our people on EAC Projects and Programmes”, President Nkurunziza said

The Speaker of EALA, the Rt. Hon. Abdirahin H. Abdi noted that the Newsletter would be devoted to reporting on matters of EALA and important issues and developments taking place within the EAC region.

“Our editorial policy shall strive in telling the truth as well as being integral while offering the most educative, informative, entertaining and transformative content”, the Rt. Hon Abdi said.

The arrival of the Newsletter thus marks a turning point in EALA’s bid to leverage its corporate image in the eyes and ears of its constituents.  The Newsletter also serves to enhance public understanding of EALA’s roles and responsibilities as the legislative Organ of the EAC as provided for and articulated by Article 49 of the Treaty for the Establishment of the EAC.

According to the Rt. Hon. Abdi, the launch takes place a few months after the launch of the EALA website (www.eala.org) and the EALA Strategic Plan at the 5th Meeting of the Third Session held in Nairobi and Mombasa, Kenya respectively. The Speaker termed the launch a momentous occasion that was also, timely in the scheme of things with regards to EALA’s Plan of Action for the year 2010/11.

Bunge la Afrika Mashariki literally means the East African Parliament.
