EALA Conference on MDGS the 25th Anniversary Celebrations of the Global Parliamentarians on Habitat

‘Parliaments as key Partners in the Achievement of MDGs and the habitat Agenda: Celebrating 25 Years of the GPH’ - August 19-20th, 2013. The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) in collaboration with the Global Parliamentarians on Habitat (GPH) Africa Chapter shall hold a high level two day conference on MDGs and the Habitat Agenda in Arusha. The Conference which takes place at the EAC Headquarters on August 19-20th 2013, also marks the 25th Anniversary celebrations of the GPH.

The President of the United Republic of Tanzania his H.E Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete has been invited to address and officially open the Conference on August 19, 2013.

The conference brings together 150 participants including EALA Members, Speakers from the national Assemblies, Members from National Parliaments in the EAC and the African continent, UN bodies as well as Civil Society Representatives.

OBJECTIVES

  • To celebrate 25 years of existence and showcase significant achievements, challenges and come up with feasible solutions and way forward
  • To bring influence to bear on decision making processes in order to foster co-ordinated action by governments, communities, the Private Sector and non-governmental organizations
  • To raise awareness on adequate habitat

Under the GPH umbrella, Parliamentarians have set themselves the goal of ensuring that their respective Governments increasingly address issues in the attainment of the Habitat Agenda by mainly focusing on areas of housing, sustainable urban and city development, human settlement, water and sanitation. Efforts to support MDG goals are actively encouraged. The UN launched a process of assessing the performance of Member States in attaining these goals and for respective stakeholders to make input in the post 2015 MDG agenda. EALA wishes to use this conference to propose recommendations to UN on the post 2015 MDG (MDG + 2015) agenda.
