EAC Customs Management (Amendment) Bill, 2019 sails through First Reading

East African Legislative Assembly, Arusha, Tanzania October, 3rd, 2019The East African Community Customs Management (Amendment) Bill, 2019 has sailed through the First Reading. 

The object of the Bill is to amend section 34(5) of the East African Community Customs Management Act, 2004 to extend the time for removal of bulk non-containerised goods from a port of discharge beyond the 21 days prescribed by sub-section (1). The Bill moved by Hon Abdikadir Omar Aden, was committed to the Committee on Communication, Trade and Investment (CTI).  The Committee is expected to undertake public hearings at a later date and report back the findings during the next sitting of the House.  Once the Bill sails through the 2nd and 3rd Readings and receives assent by the EAC Heads of State, it shall become law.
